NFL star Cam Newton has issued an apology over his “degrading” remarks to a female reporter.
Newton has been criticised for comments made to Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue in a pre-match news conference.
After being asked about a receiver, Newton replied: “it’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.”
‘I don’t think it’s funny to talk about routes. I think its my job’ she said
The Carolina Panthers star has been dropped by sponsor Dannon and has taken to Twitter to apologise for his comments.
“After careful thought, I understand that my word choice was extremely degrading and disrespectful to women,” Newton said.
”If you are a person who took offence to what I said, I sincerely apologise to you.
“I‘m a father to two beautiful daughters, and at their age I try to instill in them that they can do and be anything that they want to be.
“During this whole process I’ve already lost sponsors and countless fans, I realise that the joke was really on me. And I’ve learned a valuable lesson from this.”
Too many things are considered offensive this days and as sportsmen and public figure we just have to be careful with wjat we say irrespective of what our opinions are.
World has become so broken and fragile that we have to continually guard what comes out of our mouth.
